put your ipod on shuffle and post the first ten songs and what they remind you of.

    1. been a son by nirvana. track three on their greatest hits, i bought that for fifteen bucks even before i was really into buying CDs. it was played at nearly every sixteenth birthday i went to in 2004, including my own. introduced me to grunge, and was the first track by nirvana that i truly loved.

    2. porcelain by moby. my second kairos retreat. i was a student leader, and had to prepare a speech with some ‘thought provoking’ music to play at the end. this was when coldplay was kicking off in a big way, and it was either music from parachutes, or moby’s soft stuff that the other leaders picked. i remember porcelain was played after the speech that was before mine (which was delivered by a wonderful young man who was struck down with a debilitating disease in his final years of highschool, an insight into the pain he experienced and courage he gained was both uplifting and heartbreaking), and it was really hard for me to get going with that in mind. (i played the kuriyamino version of ‘clubbed to death’, btw)

    3. superstar by saliva. what only serves as mild nostalgia these days, i genuinely thought was pretty damn hardcore five years ago. this track was from the original fnf movie, iirc, and it led to me paying retail for their lp ‘every six seconds’ and genuinely enjoying every minute of it. later that summer i would spend a week in the gold coast with my friend and his parents and see copies of this in every cd store that we went to.

    4. rosanna by toto. those late-night advertisements hawking cd compilations. whatever one that had this in it, came on one night after an adam sandler movie when i was on holiday over australia day long weekend. throughout the movie all we were doing is drinking, and one of my friends was fair plastered by the time the ad came on. every blonde singer that came on screen would be met with “hey look, it’s bonnie tyler! tyleeeeeeeer!” (the guy’s name is tyler [there was only one bonnie tyler song on the compilation])

    5. enter sandman by metallica. on a summer night, the day after or before someone’s birthday, i was at a friends house who is a really hospitable sort of dude. he went inside to get everyone that was there drinks, and waited inside until about 55 seconds into this song until the opening riff kicked in so he would make an epic entrance out the door with drinks in hand (that ‘bahh ner ner nyerrr’ bit, yknow)

    6.  nectar by BT. amazing track from an amazing album that i bought for 28 dollars, and only because of the generosity of a mormon friend of mine who is probably much more selfless than most people i know. without thinking, he just gave me three dollars he had on him to make up the difference, without even thinking of holding it over my head later on.

    7. through the loop by pendulum. the song is irrelevant, the intro is trippy. i have no idea how ‘through the loop’ relates to charlie and the chocolate factory, but for some reason i remembered what the name to this song was, and it paid off when someone asked what it was in a conversation about music and sampling. instant cred thanks to pendulum yayayay.

    8. score by slyder. RISE.FM from gta3, fuck i loved that game and that radio station. one of the first things i did when i got into the world of music piracy was to get as many tunes from video games that i liked over the years, and one of the first tracks i searched for was score.

    9. jardin de cecile by juno reactor. fantastic goa trance outfit that have really hard to source albums. somehow i stumbled upon two of them in a bargain bin at a local cd store when they were in a liquidating mood. 1 dollar each. it’ll pain certain people i know to find out that i also got two other albums from that bin for a dollar each by a certain group called infected mushroom.

    10. knights of cydonia by muse. “hey, isn’t that kenicky from grease?” “yeah?” “hey this song is fair awesome” “yeah!” “hey aren’t we seeing them at bdo next month?” “yeah!” “i’m looking forward to that now” “yeah?” “yeah!”
